Orava is a characteristic region of northwestern Slovakia. Its nature captivates each visitor. On the north Orava borders with Oravské Beskydy with its ridge forming a state border with the Polish Republic. On the west and south it neighbours with Kysuce, Turiec and Liptov regions. On the east the tallest mountain range in Slovakia – Tatry – reaches Orava with its part Roháče. River Orava flows through the territory of Orava round the central mountain range Oravská Magura and disembogues into Váh. Oravská Magura divides Orava into Upper, so called White Orava and Lower Orava. The central locations of these regions are Námestovo and Dolný Kubín.

This unique geographic location from the south embraced by Malá Fatra and Chočské Vrchy, given elevation above sea level and largest water reservoir in Slovakia secure Orava its characteristic climate. The coldest month of the year is january with average temperatures of minus 4 to minus 7 degrees Centigrade. Cold and long winters with rich precipitation form very good conditions for winter tourism and sports, and that especially for cross-country and downhill skiing, ice-skating, snowboarding, ice-hockey, sledge or dog sleigh riding. There are ice-skating rinks, ski tows with night lighting, running tracks, heated gyms available as well. The highest average temperatures prevail in July, togehter with June and August the months suitable months for summer tourism. The favorite summer tourism activities are connected to Orava Dam and thermal swimming pool in Oravice. Good conditions invite for practicing yachting, windsurfing, rowing, swimming and recreational bathing. The remaining seasons of spring and autumn are not any less attractive. Orava nature offers hiking tracks of different levels of difficulty for pedestrians or bike riders. Orava is rich in forest fruits – mushrooms, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and herbs. It also provides opportunities for trout, grayling, eel fishing on trout streams and zander, carp, pike and queen of waters -culpin fishing on Orava Dam. Rich hunting grounds offer marten, fox, roebuck, deer and wild boar hunting.

These conditions have inculcated into Orava people kind-heartedness, modesty, vigorousness and vivaciousness. It is manifested in the well-preserved historical monuments Orava Castle, Museum of P.O. Hviezdoslav, Museum of M. Medvecká, Orava Gallery, Art Island, Gamekeeper´s cottage of Hviezdoslav, Museum of Orava Village, Wooden Church in Tvrdošín and various cultural monuments as Column of St. Trinity, Sculpture of St. Magdaléna, calvaries, Cave of Lurds, belfries, St. Ann’s Chapel and Chapel of St. Mary. To this day one can find demonstration of traditional folk creativity as production of wooden butter tubs, milk jugs and tools, bagpipes, carving in wood with religious motives, woven baskets for potatoes, fruits and vegetables, painted and hand made pictures from natural and other materials. Inseparable part of typical nature of Orava are folk songs together with folk dances, many traditions such as spinning, feather stripping, Orava wedding, Christmas, Carnival, Easter traditions. The region provides many sporting grounds.

During winter season there are quantity of ski-tows available operating on terrains of different levels of difficulty, more of which have night lighting. They form good conditions for all categories of skiers and snowboarders. Hilly terrain lays no limits for its use in many ways – sledging, bob-sledging, or traditional plastic bag downhill sliding. The country is generous also for cross-country skiers. Visitors can lead active holiday taking use of natural ice-skating areas formed on small rivers or other water areas. For more demanding tourists there are skating-rinks with night lighting suitable for figure skating or hockey.

When riding sledge one can enjoy the atmosphere of forest nooks covered with snow and narrow trails and return to the times when sledge was the only transportation mean.

Pleasant and beneficial rest after all day sport activities can be taken in the thermal swimming pool in Oravica with natural mineralized water containing sulphur, calcite, sodium, magnesium, suitable for treatment of illnesses of moving parts, kidneys and urinary organs. Water temperature in winter averages about 36 to 38 degrees Centigrade, in summer 32 to 35 degrees Centigrade.

Summer time can be spent actively with sports on Orava Dam. Besides swimming one can spent pleasant moments water skiing, bicycling, windsurfing, boating or yachting.

A horse ride on meadows full of blooming flowers and on the scenic forest paths creates an unforgettable adventure.

If you are attracted to quietness and peace of mountain environment you can choose a hiking trail from Oravská Magura to Piľsko or Babia Hora or to picturesque Roháče.

One can admire nature or explore historic and cultural monuments of Orava on the biking paths as well.

One can enrich pleasant walks in nature by picking forest fruits – blueberries, raspberries, strawberries or variety of herbs. Unique mushroom terrain brings joy to exited mushroom hunters. Orava is a largely forested region. Therefore ever since wood has been widely used material for production of utility and decorative articles. It is still used today for building houses. Different products used to be made out of wood – kitchen dishes, tools, grain and clothing chests, sheep keeper’s dishes – famous "črpák”, original cups with richly carved handle.
